Because at UNT, we really do Mean Green

In the house

- Use eco-friendly cleaning supplies with out phosphates or other harmful chemicals. Coconut based cleaners are a great choice, or you can create your own with vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Research some recipes that suite you needs on the internet.

- Grow a garden, anyone can do it! Whether you live in a house or a small apartment, anyone can grow small potted plants in and around their home. Grow native plants that don’t require more water or nutrients than your area can provide, and remember to check to see if the plant is alright to have around pets. Plants consume carbon dioxide while exhaling oxygen, so the air in and around your home will be cleaner, while also reducing your carbon footprint.

- Buy clothes and household items from thrift and consignment shops. Thrift stores have interesting and unique items for a very low price, so things like furnishings, decor, and accessories can be bought guilt free. You also save a lot of the earths resources and energy by reusing things instead of buying new. Check out our resources page for local thrift stores here in Denton.

- Recycle! Denton has several recycling centers all over the city. Check out our Resources page to find out where they are and what materials are acceptable by the city.

On th Road

- Make sure your vehicle is in good shape. That means changing your oil regularly and getting regular tune-ups. This prevents more harmful emissions from getting into our air, so we have cleaner air to breath.

- Check your tire pressure. When your tires are not properly pressurized your car has to work harder to get you where you are going, and that wastes a lot of gas. Lower your cars emissions by buying a small tire gauge and checking them every week or so.

- Ride a bike. Riding your bike can be a very rewarding and inexpensive form of transportation. Most maintenance can be done yourself, and you never have to pay for gas. You also get a good workout where ever you are going, so you lower your risk of heart related disease.

- Walk! You would be surprised how many places are walking distance from your home. Try walking to the store when you only have a few items to buy, or to a friends house to have some fun. Walking is healthy and rewarding, and the most eco-friendly transportation option.
